The northern parts of India, including national capital Delhi and adjacent regions, have witnessed thunderstorms and gusty winds on Monday late night. The IMD issued a high alert in several northern Indian states, including Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh and Delhi on Tuesday. According to reports, rain and hailstorm hit Haryana's Karnal, Fatehabad and Kurukshetra areas.

The hailstorm and rain have disrupted electricity supply. "Light to moderate lightning strikes and thunderstorm patches over North Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand near Chandigarh, Shimla, and Dehradun," Private weather forecaster Skymet tweeted.

According to the India Meteorological Department, thunderstorm accompanied with squall (with wind speeds reaching 50-Â70 kmph) and hail ia very likely at isolated places in the country, including Delhi-NCR on Tuesday.

"Thunderstorm and dust storm accompanied by high-speed winds are very likely at isolated places in Rajasthan. Heavy rain is very likely at isolated places over Assam and Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, Tamil Nadu, South Interior Karnataka and Kerala," a Met department weather warning bulletin said.

Strong dust-laden winds on Monday fanned a fire that broke out in a parked ambulance due to burning mosquito coil, killing two people sleeping inside and injuring another critically, police said.
The late-night dust storm that hit Delhi and several northern parts have also affected the flight operations at India Gandhi International Airport. A high-velocity dust storm hit parts of north India on Monday night with a wind speed of up to 70 kilometres per hour, the Met office said.

Delhi adjoining states Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan that witnessed gusty winds and squalls affected the visibility in the area, power cut and damage of properties. Trees and electricity poles were uprooted in several areas with reports of power outages.
