TikTok Ban in India: Government issues notice, asks Google, Apple to take down TikTok app
After the Supreme Court refused to stay the ban on the TikTok app levied by the Madras High Court, the Government of India has asked Google and Apple to take down the app from its app store.
In a major setback to the TikTok company, the Madurai bench of Madras High Court had banned the app after passing an order on April 3 and directed the government from prohibiting the download of the TikTok app across the country.
As per a report published in The Economic Times, people aware about the case have said that further downloads of the app will not be possible but those who have already downloaded it, will be able to use it.
“The High Court asked the government to prohibit download of TikTok application. It (MeitY) is ensuring that by asking Google and Apple to delete it from the app stores. Now it is up to the companies to do it or appeal the order,” said a person who was aware about the case.
Recently, an incident shocked the Delhi residents when a 19-year old boy was killed after his friends were recording a video on the TikTok app. Also, many vulgar content has also been reported in the app.
The company has issued its statement and has pleaded innocence in the case.
The TikTok companies statement read, “As per the proceedings in the Supreme Court today, the Madras High Court will hear the matter on ex parte ad interim order. The Supreme Court has listed the matter again for April 22, 2019, to be apprised of the outcome of the hearing on the April 16th, 2019 before the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court.”
