A PhD student at the Jawaharlal Nehru University Anmol Ratan, who had been accused of having raped a 28-year-old PhD scholar at the university, surrendered before the police at the Vasant Kunj (north) police station, in Delhi on 24 August.

The PhD scholar, who alleged that she had been raped by AISA activist Ratan, had registered her statement before a Magistrate on Wednesday. Ratan had already been denied anticipatory bail by the court, and was also refused protection from arrest. The court had then adjourned the matter, which is now set to be heard on 27 August.

According to the complainant, the accused had brought her into his room on the pretext of giving her a movie she wanted to watch, gave her a drink that was spiked, and raped her while she was unconscious.

Ratan has been booked under Sections 376 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code.

AISA, has already distanced themselves from the accused, and has promised to cooperate in the investigation procedure.
