The Election Commission announced the poll dates for five state Assemblies - Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Manipur, Goa and Uttarakhand.
A press conference was held at noon, on 4 January, where Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi announced a list of dates including the last date of filing nominations, when each state will vote, the day of counting and other details related to security, transparency, facilities etc.

After completion of polling, the counting will take place on 11 march 2017 for all states.
Zaidi said over 16 crore voters will exercise their democratic rights in these five states.
The terms of the legislative assembly of Goa, Manipur and Punjab will expire on 18 March, and Uttarakhand on 26 March. The legislative term of Uttar Pradesh Assembly ends on 27 May.
The Election Commission yesterday held a meeting with the Chief Electoral Officers of these five states to fine tune the arrangements for the assembly polls.
More than 160 million voters will participate in these elections. Voting will be conducted in as many as one lakh 85,000 polling stations. Electronic Voting Machines will be used in all five states.
