Burhan Wani death anniversary: Centre suspends Amarnath Yatra and mobile internet snapped in Kashmir; Hurriyat leaders detained

Taking notice of the death anniversary of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani, the government suspended Amarnath Yatra and snapped mobile internet connections across Kashmir Valley on Sunday.

Burhan Wani along with his two colleagues was killed in 2016.

Tral, the hometown of Wani in southern Kashmir was sealed by Armed forces and the curfew was imposed in several parts of the Valley. All Hurriyat leaders and activists, who called for a shutdown in Kashmir, were detained or arrested to avoid any public assembly.

During the whole day, Business activities and markets remained closed and the public transport was shut down.

Meanwhile, the militant organization Hizbul Mujahideen released photographs of new recruits. One of the recruits is the younger brother of IPS officer posted in the northeast. He has been missing since May.

The joint Hurriyat leadership urged people to observe a complete blackout after 8 pm protesting against the death of three people in Army firing in Kulgam on Saturday. They also called for the shutdown on July 8.

As there was information of possible militant attack on Wan’s anniversary, the government deployed police and paramilitary forces on all major roads and the highway.

As the authorities has shut down the Jammu-Srinagar highway and the Mughal road connecting Kashmir with the rest of the state, hundreds of people including Amarnath yatris, who left Jammu despite suspension of Yatra, were got stranded.
