Assam attack: Student federation announces 12 hour shutdown in Tinsukia, after 5 Bengali workers shot dead

At least five people were killed yesterday allegedly by the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) terrorists, who are said to be Bengali speaking youths in Upper Assam’s Tinsukia district.

Early reports have suggested that the terrorist, who killed the youths, belonged to the ULFA-Independent but the outfit has categorically denied its role in the activity and the attack.

The attack is being condemned widely, as the earlier reports have suggested that, it was due to the linguistic issue and the Assam is currently undergoing a National Register of Citizenship charter, which is identifying Indian nationals and the Bangladeshi’s under the Supreme Court’s jurisdiction.

The chief minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee has criticized the incident and had said that the Trinamool Congress will organize protest rallies against the incident and has demanded strict punishment against the perpetrators involved in the attack.

Mamata Banerjee wrote on Twitter, “Terrible news coming out of Assam. We strongly condemn the brutal attack in Tinsukia, is this the outcome of recent NRC development? We have no words to express our deep sorrow to the grieving families. The perpetrators must be punished at the very earliest.”

She added that, “In protest against the brutal killings in Assam @AITCofficial will organise protest rallies tomorrow (Friday, November 2) in different parts of north and south Bengal including Siliguri and Kolkata.”

In a press release today, the ULFA-Independent, suspected of the attack issued a press release saying, “In protest against the brutal killings in Assam @AITCofficial will organise protest rallies tomorrow (Friday, November 2) in different parts of north and south Bengal including Siliguri and Kolkata.”
