Video captures woman brutalising mother-in-law

Grisly evidence of domestic violence emerged from Uttar Pradesh's Bijnor on Tuesday, as a video capturing a woman's brutal assault on her elderly mother-in-law went viral.

The video, which stands out for its astounding cruelty, clearly shows Sangeeta Jain pummeling her septuagenarian mother-in-law Rajrani Jain. Dissatisfied with this, she then attempts to strangle her and finally takes a brick repeatedly to the victim's head. The rabid nature of the attack, which conveys a deep animosity, has landed the victim in the hospital with a head covered in bandages. Sangeeta has been arrested.

"My daughter-in-law tried to kill me... She strangled me with a dupatta," said a frail Rajrani from her hospital bed.

Sangeeta's husband, Sandeep, had secretly installed a CCTV camera in the room where the beating took place, hoping to catch his wife in the act. He says his wife is habitually violent. They have been married for seven years, and Sangeeta recently slapped dowry harassment and marital rape cases against him.

"They harassed me for dowry, tortured me... I have nowhere to go," said Sangeeta.

The visuals of Rajrani Jain being swung wildly by the makeshift noose around her throat are horrifying. Sangeet's claims of harassment and torture, however, add another dimension to the matter and speak to the opaque and ambiguous nature of domestic strife.
