A policeman was killed on Friday after being run over by alleged cattle smugglers. According to reports, the policeman was trying to intercept their vehicle at a checkpoint in Jaunpur district of Uttar Pradesh.

According to a PTI report, Triloki Tiwari, posted as head constable, sustained serious injuries after he was crushed by the van carrying cattle at Badlapur check point, the police said.

Tiwari was rushed to the district hospital and later referred to Varanasi, where doctors declared him dead on arrival, they said.

Superintendent of Police Atul Saxena said Tiwari, from Kaimur district in Bihar, was posted at Saraipokhta outpost for several years.

He said a wireless message was received this morning around at 3 am that smugglers were transporting cattle in two vehicles.

The SP said the smugglers escaped from the spot after the incident. The police has launched a further probe to nab the accused.
