How to Maintain Eye Health Outside of Your Diet

Speed News Desk | Updated on: 27 April 2018, 9:52 IST

It’s likely that people take the ability to see for granted and don’t focus on their eye health. Only when your vision is affected by an eye condition such as glaucoma or simply poor eye health, is there a sudden rush to keep your eyes healthy - when, in some cases, it is too late.

To avoid sight deterioration, there are plenty of things to be doing to reduce the risk of future issues. An easy place to start is diet, with those more experienced telling us about the benefits of carrots, fish and green vegetables. It’s not just food that boosts eye health though, so let’s look at some other options that don’t necessarily spring to mind.

Glasses and contact lenses

If you’ve been wondering why your eyesight isn’t totally crisp and clear for a while now, it could be something as simple as needing glasses to achieve 20/20 vision. Sometimes, getting glasses when you’re older can be a bit odd, especially if you haven’t worn them before and are worried about how they’ll look. Daily contact lenses can act as a solution here, providing the same prescription as glasses. Nowadays, cheap contact lenses online sold on Vision Direct, for example, mean that the process of receiving visual aid isn’t quite so scary, and doesn’t need to be a major change in your life. It’s like any form of online shopping. The health benefit is that your eyes are supported, and you don’t strain them.

Screens

Difficult to avoid in the modern world, yet bad for the eyes. Screens, whether that’s a computer, TV, or a smartphone, can cause a lot of eye problems, but there are a few tricks when looking at screens to dramatically lower the chance of such problems. Firstly, no screens before bedtime. A bright screen in a dark room not only stimulates your brain and stops you from sleeping but strains your eyes. Obviously, a lot of people’s jobs require sitting at a computer all day. This doesn’t have to be a problem, just make sure you sit up properly, blink and keep hydrated. Taking breaks and looking at faraway objects also gives your eyes rest time.

Exercise

This goes together with a good diet. It’s important to keep healthy, both with what you eat and drink, and the amount of exercise you do. Lack of exercise and a bad diet can cause obesity, potentially leading to conditions such as diabetes, which can in turn affect the eyes. Naturally, if you are exercising outside in the sun, it’s important to wear sunglasses, to protect the eyes from UV rays, as if they’re exposed to a lot of sunlight, macular degeneration could be just one of the problems to arise.

Now that you’ve read this, you will understand how vital good eye health is. It’s not just one thing that keeps our eyes in check, it’s a combination, and each one contributes to maintaining a high quality of vision. On top of this, all these tips are also good for your health in general, so it’s certainly worth it.
