NEET 2016 topper's father has a message for all parents: Stop forcing your children

NEET 2016 topper Ekansh Goyal's father has message for fellow parents: "Don't force your own ambition on children. Let children choose their own field. Your job is to support them, not fulfill desires through your children," says Sanjay Goyal, father of NEET 2016 All India Rank (AIR) holder 2.

Referring to the increase in Kota suicide reports over the last two years, Sanjay Goyal lashed out, "If becoming a doctor is that important for you, then why didn't you do it? Why are you forcing your child to do it? Many parents want children to follow their footsteps and become a doctor or engineer. But what if your child is not cut out for this?"

Ekansh Goyal scored an impression able 682 out of 720, scoring 99.999726 percentile in NEET 2016, results of which were declared on 16 August. Currently studying at AIIMS, Delhi, Ekansh has secured AIR 9 in AIIMS MBBS exam. He had also secured AIR 8 in JIPMER 2016.

Sanjay Goyal reached out to all parents, saying it is unfair to put so much pressure on students. "Most parents don't understand the capabilities of their own child. They try to select the path for their children, unwilling to understand what they like to do," he says.

"I never put pressure on Ekansh. Yes, I followed his decisions, supported him at every step. But the decision to study medicine was his own." Sanjay Goyal is an Odisha-based business man.

Ekansh's father recalls how one parent, who's child had AIR 20, cribbed about losing AIR 1 position. "Doesn't the fact that there are more than 90,000 aspirants below your child make it an achievement? Why does everything need to be the best? So what if someone make it to AIIMS? Are other medical colleges not good enough? Don't students graduate from there?" he lashed out.

"He'd always been an intelligent student. It was his decision to take up biology post Class 10," said Nancy Goyal, Ekansh's mother.

In 2014, like several medical and engineering aspirants, Ekansh Goyal shifted base to Kota, to study at Allen. His mother too joined him in Kota, staying for two years.

"Ekansh is not money-minded. He wants to serve people, help them out - that is his chief reason to pursue medicine. He loves to study. We never asked him to go out of the way and perform well. We asked him to follow his dreams and nurtured it," she says.

Supporting his parents statements, Ekansh tells Catch, "Being happy is the most important thing. Do what makes you happy, what interests you. Don't try to pursue something you don't like."

The NEET 2016 topper is an avid footballer, who played at the state-level and is fan of Real Madrid and Manchester United. He also loves playing the guitar and is a complete foodie.
