In a bizarre incident, a 17-year-old girl ended up with a huge problem as she had the habit of chewing on her hair.
According to the reports of metro.co.uk, the girl was chewing her hair for so many years that got collected in her abdomen.
The offbeat case has been reported in Jharkhand’s Bokaro district. The teenage girl was identified as Sweety Kumari.
Doctors suspected tumour in the stomach:
About three years ago, an ultrasound examination report suggested that Kumari had a tumor in her stomach. But later, the doctor found that the huge lump on her abdomen.
Doctor GN Sahu, who was treating Kumari left shocked after finding that a hairball had occupied in her entire stomach as a result of her hair-chewing habit.
In a bid to remove the hairball of around 7 kg, Kumari underwent a six-hour operation that was led by Dr GN Sahu.
Last week, the medics were successfully able to pull out the large, entangled mass of hair that was collected in her abdomen for several years.
As per Dr Sahu, he had never seen such massive accumulation in a patient’s stomach in his 40-years of service.
In medical terms, Kumari’s condition is termed as Rapunzel Syndrome, which is a rare intestinal condition resulting from ingesting hair for a prolonged period of time.
Rapunzel syndrome is named after the character Rapunzel in the Brothers Grimm fairy tale. Rapunzel was known for her long hair and beauty.
