The Election Commission has lodged an FIR against Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi for holding a press conference on the day of polling.
Earlier, after being served a notice by the EC, Gogoi had accused the poll body of being biased. He said that law only prohibited him from campaigning and not from holding a press conference.
However, the Election Commission told the media: “In the morning, Assam CM addressed a press conference in Guwahati which is a violation as per RP act 126, as it may influence the voters.”
Assam witnessed the last part of its two-phased polling today amid sporadic violence that led to the death of one person in Baperta. The EC has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident. Voter turnout stood at an estimated 79 per cent.
