New Delhi: Meeting Mishap in 2009

In 2009, Gadadhar Sahu faced a life-altering mishap while travelling from Odisha to Gujarat. The accident, occurring during train deboarding, resulted in severe injuries, leading to a startling declaration of death by first responders.

From Declared Dead to Gold Medalist

Transported to the morgue, the medical team discovered Sahu was miraculously alive, but the cost was high—his legs had to be amputated. Despite the tragic turn of events, Sahu, a 7th-grade student at the time, defied the odds to become a gold medalist for Odisha in powerlifting, marking a remarkable journey of resilience.

Overcoming Struggles: Poverty and Perseverance

The aftermath of the accident closed many doors for Sahu in leading a conventional life. Facing poverty, he found an avenue to make a living by assisting his brother in running a fast-food kiosk in their hometown, Narendrapur, located in the Ganjam District of Odisha.

Finding Solace in Bodybuilding

Turning to bodybuilding as a hobby, Sahu discovered solace and a new identity. His initial success came with a gold medal in the wheelchair category of the 'Mr Odisha Junior Bodybuilding Competition' in 2016. However, the financial strain of required supplements led him to the discipline of para powerlifting.

Transition to Para Powerlifting

Inspired by para-athletes, Sahu shifted his focus to para-powerlifting, considering it a natural fit due to his background in bodybuilding. Motivated and determined, he began a rigorous training routine and expressed his belief in overcoming the challenges associated with being a para-athlete.

Crucial Role of Government Support

Acknowledging the challenges of training in his hometown, Sahu highlighted the crucial role played by the Government of Odisha. A ten-day training camp at the Kalinga Stadium ahead of the Khelo India Para Games proved instrumental in his preparation, emphasizing the importance of accessible facilities.

Aiming Higher: Dreams and Gratitude

Having clinched the gold medal at the Khelo India Para Games, Sahu shared his aspirations, expressing a desire to be on the podium with the Indian flag. His ultimate goal is to win medals for India, showcasing the potential of para-athletes on an international stage.

Gratitude to Odisha Government and Chief Minister

Sahu expressed deep gratitude to the Government of Odisha and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for their unwavering support to him and other para-athletes in the state. He also thanked the Government of India for providing a platform for para-athletes to compete and exhibit their talents, emphasizing the potential of many para-athletes in the country who can bring glory to India if given the opportunity.
