Mary Kom deemed best female athlete at awards for Asia ceremony

Indian boxer Mary Kom has been named the best Asian Female Athlete at the first’Awards for Asia ceremony coordinated by the Asian Sportswriters Union.

The Chief Minister of Selangor YAB Tuan Haji Amirudin Shari, awarded the trophy to the winner and representatives from different countries. AIPS Asia, the organisation representing sportswriter in Asia since 1978, declared the winner at the end of the Selangor International Sports Summit which was a cooperation with the state of Selangor, placed on the coast of Malaysia.

Six time world champion Mary Kom claimed the Best Female Athlete Award following her spree in the Asian women’s boxing. Mary Kom is the only women boxer to have won a medal in seven world championship.

Mary Kom will be setting her eyes on a record seventh World Championship gold medal in the AIBA World Boxing Championship, commencing on 7th September, which well see her pass Cuban Legend Felix Savon.

This time around Mary Kom will compete in the 51kg category.

Nevertheless, Japan’s women’s football team, who won the 2011 Women’s World Cup and were runners-up in 2015, received the Best Asian Female Team award.
