With political row over municipal polls spiralling, a councillor from Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) made a dramatic point on Tuesday to the BJP-led civic body. AAP councilor Haseeb-ul-Hasan from East Delhi, jumped into an overflowing sewage drain in Shastri Park in a bid to clean it.

A videos displayed the AAP councillor standing chest-deep in the drain in a gleaming white kurta, using a rake to remove the waste matter. His assistants are seen standing on hard ground, handing various tools.

Following the clean-up, Hasan's supporters gave him a bath in milk, much in the same style as actor Anil Kapoor in "Nayak". Videos of the milk bath have been extensively shared as well.

The AAP councillor said the drain was overflowing and repeated complaints to officials, the BJP councillor and the local MLA have not looked into the matter. So he decided to take matters in his own hands. The local MLA is BJP’s Anil Kumar Bajpai.

The matter was also discussed in East Delhi's Gandhi Nagar Legislative Assembly.

The AAP and the BJP have been involved in a clash for weeks over the Centre's plan to amalgamate the three civic bodies of Delhi. On Tuesday, a bill to effect that got the nod from the Union cabinet.

The Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill – which will merge the South Delhi Municipal Corporation, North Delhi Municipal Corporation, and East Delhi Municipal Corporation -- is expected to be tabled in the ongoing Parliament Session.

AAP has questioned the timing of the bill, which is likely to impact the civic polls. Arvind Kejriwal has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to defer the civic polls.

"Prime Minister, governments will come and go. You won't be there, I won't be either. But do not weaken the institutions of the country. Don't postpone MCD elections," Kejriwal said in a video message.
