Volcanic ash from Mount Merapi covers 9th-century Buddhist temple in Indonesia

Mount Merapi has been active since May 11 and multiple eruptions have been recorded. On Thursday volcanic ash from Mount Merapi reached a 9th-century Mahayana Buddhist temple, Borobudur, confirmed temple conservation association.

A staff member at the Borobudur Conservation Association Hari Setyawan said, "Ash exposure on the temple is thin, near the stupa. It's evenly covering the entire surface of the temple,"

He also added that they are monitoring the situation. The team is assessing the volcanic ash and have prepared a shield for the stupa and floors of the temple.

The volcanic eruption was recorded once again at Mt Merapi on Thursday for four minutes.

Despite the fact that the volcanic eruption happened for four minutes, ash spewed at a height of 6,000 meters heading towards Srumbung district.

Areas affected due to volcanic eruption are Tegalrandu village, Sumber, Dukun, Ngadipuro, Banyubiru, Muntilan, Menayu, Kalibening, Salaman, Tempuran, Sedayu, Sawangan and Mungkid.
