A report from Brookings Institution, US state that Nigeria has surpassed India and became the country with the highest number of people living below the poverty line and in extreme poverty. This states that people in Nigeria live on less than $1.90 a day.

For over a decade, India had this distinction which badly reflected its population and its struggle against poverty. So, Nigeria has overthrown India and taken the first place as the world's poorest country.

The report from Brookings Institution states that in May this year Nigeria overtook India. This means in Nigeria, people struggle to get basic necessities such as food, shelter and clothing.

The report is prepared on the basis of World Poverty Clock, a model created to track progress against poverty in real time. The figures showed that India had 70.6 million people in extreme poverty, while Nigeria had 87 million.

The director of the global economy and development program, the Brookings Institution. said, "It's a good news for India, coupled with some caveats, and it's a real wake-up call for the African continent," The report even stated that by 2030, that figure could rise to nine-tenths if current trends continue.
