A 35-year-old history sheeter has been taken into custody for allegedly raping and murdering a three-year-old girl in Maharashtra’s Raigad district. The accused had just been released from prison on parole after being arrested in a rape case.

The incident took place on 30th December when the victim was asleep in her parents' shanty. The shanty didn't have any doors.

The accused, Aadesh Patil, was released ten days ago on parole in a rape case. He also has cases against him for housebreaking, theft, assault and also was externed once by the Raigad police.

As per the police, the victim was asleep near the shanty when the accused picked her up and went into the forest. The accused then allegedly raped and murdered the girl. He was seen by the victim's grandmother when he went back near the shanty to keep her body.

The grandmother cried for help but the accused managed to run away. The police then launched a search operation and arrested Patil within few hours. He has been charged with rape, murder and under several sections of the POCSO (Protection of Children against Sexual Offences) Act.

The crime was followed by massive protests in the township and local leaders demanded strict action against the accused.

A social activist from Raigad spoke to the Maharashtra Home Minister and demanded that the case against Patil is run in a fast-track court and that he should be awarded punishment as stringent as was awarded in the Nirbhaya case.
