In a shocking incident, a woman was arrested for allegedly killing her two-month-old child at Belaighata area in Kolkata, informed police on Monday.

According to reports, the body of the two-month-old baby girl was missing from her home and later it was found in a manhole near her residence.

On Sunday the woman had filed a complaint at the local police station regarding the missing of her baby girl. In her complaint, the woman had said that an unknown man barged into her flat in the afternoon when she and the baby were alone at home. She was hit by the unknown youth who fled with her baby.

Acting complaint the police launched a probe into the matter. During the course of investigations, the police questioned the security guards of the woman's flat, baby sitter and the mother herself. The police continued the questioning for several hours after which the woman admitted committing the crime.

"She had alleged that an unknown man barged into her flat in the afternoon when she and the baby were alone at home. She was hit by the unknown youth who fled with her baby," the police said.

"There were several discrepancies in the claims of the woman, the baby's mother. We started questioning her which continued for several hours after which she admitted committing the crime... it seems she is under severe depression that led to this mishap. We have arrested her," said a senior officer of Kolkata Police, according to PTI.

"The mother is probably suffering from 'postnatal depression' which led to the killing of her baby, the officer claimed.
