In yet another incident of crime against women reported from Kolkata, a woman was allegedly raped by an astrologer on the pretext of performing various rituals for the well being of her family members.

The astrologer-cum-tantric was approached by the woman and her family members as they were going through a rough patch. Around 45 days back, the astrologer was contacted by the victim’s family after seeing a newspaper ad.

The accused has been identified Abhijit Ghosh also known as Jyotish Subhas and Jyotish Subhasish. According to the woman’s complaint, the accused earned her trust on the pretext of performing rituals for the protection of her family members.

The accused was arrested by Chitpur police, for allegedly raping the woman.

As maintained by a report in The Times of India, the woman said that she was taken to various locations around Birbhum, Burdwan, and Diamond Harbour under the guise of performing rituals for which she was required to drink a spiked beverage and resins.

The woman said that she had lost consciousness twice after drinking the spiked drink. When she came back to her sences, she realised she had been raped.

The woman notified the police when the accused told her to leave the city for the third time.

The accused informed the victim that her spouse was sick and that something needed to be done to cure his health. The woman trusted the accused and followed his directions, the officer said.

The woman claimed to have paid around Rs 20,000 twice to perform the ritual and purchase certain stones that were later found to be fake, the police officer added.

However, the cops are trying to find out whether the accused had been involved in similar crimes earlier.
