Harassed over male child, woman drowns three-month-old daughter in water tank

Driven by the perpetual pestering by her husband and in-laws for a boy, a woman allegedly drowned her three-month-old daughter in a water tank at her home in Mumbai’s Kalachowki area, police said on Thursday.

The appalling incident occurred at Sangharsh Sadan building in Ferbunder area on Tuesday, a police official said.


The accused, aged 36, had at first claimed that the baby had been kidnapped by an unidentified person who had come to the house and gave sedative to her on Tuesday, an official said.

On the basis of the mother's complaint, the police had lodged an FIR of kidnapping and had also released a sketch of the suspect, he said.

Police teams were set-up in order to locate the suspect and CCTV cameras installed in the area were looked into, he said.

A police team called the complainant and her husband to get more information about the incident on Thursday, the official said.

In the time of interrogation, the cops took the woman into confidence and asked her if she had killed the baby, after which the woman broke down and confessed to the crime, he said.

The accused woman revealed that she had thrown the baby in a water tank, kept in the loft inside the house, the official said.

As maintained by the police, the accused had tied the knot in 2011 and had a daughter in 2013.

When the woman conceived for the second time, her in-laws used black magic to finf out the sex of the kid and forced her to go through an abortion.

Similarly, The woman was forced to undergo three more abortion process, and when she conceived again, she was allowed to continue the pregnancy, the official said.

The woman was forced to undergo a caesarean in August and she gave birth to a girl, he said, adding that following the child's birth, the family allegedly shunning the woman.

As the accused was all by her self, her parents came to stay with her, he said.

The police recovered the kid's dead body from the water tanker, the official said, adding that further investigation into the matter is underway.
