Jayalalithaa catches fitness fever: Amma parks, gyms coming soon

Perhaps it's the after-effect of the Rio Olympics, but fitness fever has gripped J Jayalalithaa. After setting up Amma canteens and Amma breastfeeding rooms across Tamil Nadu, the chief minister has promised to open Amma parks and Amma gymnasiums to provide healthy recreation and fitness facilities to the youth. The idea is to encourage the youth to step up the state's sports involvement.

Jayalalithaa told the Assembly Wednesday that 500 Amma parks and as many Amma gymnasiums would be opened at a cost of Rs 100 crore and Rs 50 crore, respectively. While the gyms are intended to benefit rural youth, the parks, complete with recreation facilities, walking paths and gym equipment, would benefit children and women.
