Why not call the Orlando Killings an LGBT massacre ?

Kunal Majumder | Updated on: 10 February 2017, 1:49 IST

The Orlando massacre can be studied in two ways.

One: It is an act of terror, committed by a Muslim.

Two: It is an act of terror, committed by a homophobe, who happened to be a Muslim. The second, of course, is the more nuanced approach, and thereby may not find too many takers.

First the easy way. 29-year-old Omar Mateen is a Muslim. His family migrated from Afghanistan. His father had attempted to fight the Afghan elections in 2014. Mateen called 911 and informed them that he was an Islamic State fighter. Minutes later, he killed 50 in a night club. IS claimed responsibility.

Thus, all Muslims are suspects. America must not take any refugees from Syria, who would also be potential terrorist. Donald Trump was right!

Now the nuanced approach. 29-year-old Omar Mateen was a homophobe. He was born in New York. He wasn't religious. So Islam isn't the factor, says his father. He saw two men kissing in front of his wife and child. So he decided to slaughter gay people. He got a gun, easily available in the US. 50 dead in a gay night club.

Thus, Mateen isn't the only homophobe in the US. America is full of homophobes across religious lines. Many Christian Right wingers actually celebrated the killing. Gun control needs to be put in place. Obama was right!

Please take a position based on the flexibility of your conscience. But the fact remains 50 people are dead because of their SEXUALITY.

Orlando killing is not about the perpetrator. It is not about a specific religion. Nor is it about a cultural clash. So let's not focus there. It is about being GAY. The sooner we accept that, the quicker we can address it.

Orlando killing is about people like Donald Trump who promise to reverse gay marriages.

Orlando killing is about people like Jack Phillips who refuse to serve wedding cake in a same-sex marriage.

Orlando killing is about Republican politicians who want to find excuses to legally harass homosexuals.

Orlando killing is about the Pope who refuses to accept gay marriages.

Orlando killing is about Putin who has made the lives of gay people in Russia a living hell.

Orlando killing is about Iranian and Saudi leaders who have made it their state policy to kill homosexuals.

Orlando killing is about the Indian Supreme Court judges who reimposed a ban on homosexuality.

That's the hard way of looking at the Orlando killing. Rest are mere excuses.
