Comey shares 'freedom of press' post after Trump slams CNN

Shortly after United States President Donald Trump slammed CNN, former FBI Director James Comey underscored significance of free press by tweeting out a quote by the former president and founding father, Thomas Jefferson.

"Our liberty depends on the freedom of the press, and that cannot be limited without being lost." - Thomas Jefferson, Jan. 28, 1786," Comey tweeted.

Earlier in the day, Trump blasted CNN and its international arm in a tweet, accusing the network of spreading "fake" news and representing the U.S. "very poorly" across the globe.

"@FoxNews is MUCH more important in the United States than CNN, but outside of the U.S., CNN International is still a major source of (Fake) news, and they represent our Nation to the WORLD very poorly. The outside world does not see the truth from them!" he wrote.

Comey was fired from his post by President Donald Trump amid an investigation of a likely collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian officials.

Comey is also penning a book about leadership and "yet-unheard anecdotes" from his career which is set to come out in next year's spring.
