1 dead, 5 injured in London knife attack. 19-year-old suspect arrested

One woman was killed, and five others injured in a knife attack in Russel Square in Central London.

While details of the incident are still unfolding, the London Metropolitan Police has confirmed that a 19-year-old suspect has been detained. The deceased is a 60-year-old woman.

Of the five who have sustained injuries, two are still under treatment, while the other three have been discharged.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has appealed to the people to remain "calm and vigilant".

Scotland Yard has said that mental health was a factor. Terrorism is being considered to be the primary motive behind the attack that unfolded on Wednesday night. "Terrorism is one possibility being explored at this stage," London police said in a statement. It is being speculated that the suspect may be mentally ill.

After receiving treatment in hospital the suspect is now in police custody. According to the Guardian, the suspect is Norwegian Somali.

Police reported to the scene of the attack, after receiving calls at about 10:33 pm about a man brandishing a knife and injuring people, reports CNN.

The suspect was brought into police custody after being tasered by police officials.
