Rajya Sabha to take up GST today

The long-pending GST Bill has been listed for consideration and passage in Rajya Sabha on 3 August amidst strong indications that the most far-reaching taxation reform in independent India would be supported by Congress and all other major political parties.

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill, which has been in the making for over a decade, entails introduction of a single indirect tax regime across the country.

"The GST Bill is listed for consideration and passage on Wednesday in Rajya Sabha and we seek support of all political parties. The mood is in favour of its passage," Parliamentary affairs minister Ananth Kumar said.

Bareilly: School teacher gangraped in moving vehicle at gunpoint, incident filmed

Within days of the horrific incident that unfolded in Bulandshahr, a school teacher was allegedly gangraped by three men in a moving vehicle in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly on 2 August.

The incident took place at around 7 am when the victim was going to a school where she teaches. As per reports, three masked men pulled the schoolteacher into a white Maruti van near NH-24 and drove to a deserted sugarcane field.

While two of the men raped her at gunpoint, the third clicked photographs of the act. Forensic experts have reached the spot, and are investigating the case.

Bulandshahr gangrape: Doctors thought we were lying, say victims

The 35-year-old rape survivor in the horrific gangrape case of Bulandshahr has alleged that the doctor who treated her and her 14-year-old daughter was insensitive.

The woman and her daughter were gang-raped for about three hours by a group of five men who dragged them out of their car near a highway in Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr district on Friday night.

"I had bruises all over. My daughter was bleeding but the doctor didn't believe us. She said we were lying about her condition," NDTV quoted the 35-year-old rape survivor as saying.

The police also failed to provide adequate help, the family alleged.

Bridge collapses on Mumbai-Goa highway, several vehicles missing

During the wee hours of 3 August, a bridge on the Mumbai-Goa highway collapsed due to heavy rain, bringing traffic to a halt. Reports suggest that 1 bus and several cars have gone missing in the mishap.

Rescue operations are underway to locate the bus that plunged into the river Savitri, with 22 people onboard. The Indian Coast Guard has launched a Chetak Helicopter to carry out search operations for missing vehicles.

One NDRF team, comprising of 50 men, has been rushed to the spot in search of the vehicles which are being suspected to have fallen into the Savitri river.

Of two parallel bridges that run along the stretch, the old bridge that was constructed during the British era, and used for vehicular traffic from Goa to Mumbai, was the one that collapsed. The new bridge, that is used for traffic plying from Mumbai to Goa is still intact.
