Speed News Desk | Updated on: 14 February 2017, 5:56 IST

Malayalam blockbuster Drishyam which was released on 19 December, 2013, smashed the Box Office records set by Twenty:20 in 2008. It collected Rs 42.5 crore in Kerala to become the all-time highest grosser of Malayalam cinema. Drishyam was directed by Jeethu Joseph and featured Mohanlal and Meena in lead roles. Thus Drishyam beat the collections record of Rs 32 crore set by the multistarrer Twenty:20. The content of the film was so strong that it was later remade in Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi. Commendably, all the remakes met with success.

The records set by Drishyam are still unbroken. Now the real question is how long will the film sustain its record, and more importantly, which film will eventually surpass its Box Office success?

Here's a look at five upcoming films which have the potential of going ahead of Drishyam's collections.

  • King Liar

King Liar features Dileep in the lead role and will be directed by Lal. It is touted to be the story of Sathyanarayanan, who is diagnosed with a unique disease called pseudologia fantastica that leads to compulsive lying. The film also marks the return of the super hit writer duo 'Siddique-Lal' after a gap of 22 years. Premam beauty Madonna Sebastian plays the female lead in the film. Dileep's previous film, Two Countries, was also a blockbuster and collected Rs 35 crore at the Box Office. Plus, the film is also the comeback vehicle for Dileep-Siddique after the superhit Bodyguard. The film has every chance of crossing Drsihyam's collections at the Box Office. It is set to release on 25 March, 2016.

  • Pulimurugan

Mohanlal will be looking at crossing his Drishyam's collections with his 2016 Ramadan release, Pulimurugan. Produced by Tomichan Mulakupadam and directed by Vyshak, the film's budget is reportedly a whopping Rs 18 crore. The first look of the film was released on 6 August, 2015 and it garnered fantastic response on social media platforms. The makers roped in renowned action director Peter Hein to direct the stunts. According to rumours, Mohanlal has lost as much as 6 kgs to portray the character of a hunter in the film. The superstar performed all his stunts himself, including some high voltage fight sequences with a real tiger. Most of the scenes were shot in Vietnam, a first for a Malayalam film. The film will be released in China and Vietnam as well. Pulimurugan also stars Bengali-Telugu actress Kamalini Mukherjee and Tamil actress Namitha.

  • Jacobinte Swargarajyam

The Nivin Pauly starrer Premam came close to breaking Drishyam's record in 2015. The film collected Rs 41 crore at the Box Office. However, Nivin Pauly is now ready with his next, with his favorite director Vineeth Srinivasav in April 2016. The actor-director duo's Jacobinte Swargarajyam is reportedly releasing on 7 April, 2016. Their previous films Malarvadi Arts Club and Oru Thattathin Marayathu were huge money spinners at the Box Office. Produced by Noble Thomas, this film has every chance of breaking Drishyam's collections as Nivin Pauly is at the peak of his career right now, delivering blockbusters one after another. His first release of this year, Action Hero Biju is already a super hit and still running to packed houses. • Karnan

Just like the Nivin Pauly starrer Premam, the Prithviraj starrer Ennu Ninte Moideen came very close to beating Drishyam's collection record of Rs 42.5 crores. The film's total collections at the end of it's theatrical run was 41.95 crores. However, actor-director duo of Ennu Ninte Moideen, Prithviraj Sukumaran and director RS Vimal are joining hands once again for their second project titled Karnan. The film will be a bilingual project and will be simultaneously released in Malayalam and Tamil. Karnan is expected to be a whopping Rs 45 crore film produced by Venu Kunnappilly under the banner of Kavya Films, thus becoming the costliest film ever made in Mollywood. The film narrates the story of Karnan, including his youth, his estranged relationship with his mother and his love story. Prithviraj essays the lead role. Reportedly, the film will also have popular stars from the Tamil film industry and Bollywood.

  • Aadujeevitham

It is too early to predict Aadujeevitham's fate but the audience faith on the Prithviraj - Blessy brand will ensure record breaking collections. The opening of this film will be extraordinary and it will recreate Box Office history in Kerala. The Prithviraj - Blessy team is all set to recreate Benjamin's acclaimed novel Aadujeevitham on the silver screen and has high chances of passing Drishyam's life time collections and it could create a new Rs 50 crore club. Aadujeevitham relates the story of Najeeb, a man from Kerala who migrates to Saudi Arabia with great hopes but ends up a slave in a goat farm. If Blessy achieves in making it the way he has visualised it, it will easily become one of the biggest films in the history of Malayalam cinema and the biggest contribution of Malayalam industry to world cinema.
