Catch exclusive: Mohanlal's Pulimurugan unseats Rajinikanth's Kabali to become highest opening weekend grosser

Last Friday's Malayalam release, Mohanlal starrer Pulimurugan has smashed all the opening records at the Kerala Box Office. Directed by Vysakh and produced by Tommy Mulakuppadam, the film stars Lalettan in the titular role of a hunter, Murugan. Made on a budget of Rs. 18 crore, Pulimurugan is the biggest Malayalam film till date.

Earlier Catch had reported that the film, which had released on 7 October, opened to a record-breaking collection of Rs. 4.10 crore on its opening day and will be aiming to cross the opening weekend numbers of Rs. 10.50 crore set by Rajinikanth starrer Kabali.

And now, it has been confirmed that the Lalettan starrer has shattered the opening weekend collections of the Thalaivar film. Pulimurugan has collected Rs. 13.06 crore to become the highest opening weekend grosser of all-time.

The Mohanlal starrer has also become the fastest Rs. 10 crore grosser as well.

What's more? Pulimurugan has recorded the biggest collection ever in Kerala on a single day by raking in Rs. 4.89 crore on Day 3, on Sunday.

Here is the day-wise break-up details;

  • Day 1 - Rs. 4.10 crore
  • Day 2 - Rs. 4. 07 crore
  • Day 3 - Rs. 4.89 crore

Meanwhile, Pulimurugan's assistant director, Dhananjay Shankar too had confirmed the Box Office figures in an exclusive interview to Catch. The film is Dhananjay's second release as assitant director after 2016's first blockbuster, Vineeth Sreenivasan - Nivin Pauly's Jacobinte Swargarajyam. He also revealed that due to the huge number of housefull shows, he had to call the film's producer Tommy Mulakuppadam for the tickets of Pulimurugan.
