Major turns into Unnao gang-rape case took place when CBI detains BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, who is accused of raping a 17-year-old teenage girl. The UP police lodged FIR against him after a massive outrage widespread across the nation. He was detained from his Lucknow residence in a wee hour by Central Bureau of Investigation.

The CBI move came after the CM Yogi Adityanath government asked Bengar to surrender but he ignored CM's advice to surrender before UP police. He was brought to CBI's Hazratganj office at Lucknow at 4:30 am on Friday. According to report, CBI took over the Unnao rape case from the UP Police on Thursday night within hours of the papers reaching Delhi from Lucknow as the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) is said to have intervened to hasten the formalities and the DoPT which works under the Prime Minister immediately issued a notification in this regard.

The BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Bengar has been charged under the stringent POCSO Act and sections of the Indian Penal Code or IPC dealing with rape.

CBI sources, however, said the agency has registered three separate cases, equivalent to three FIRs of rape, assault on Unnao girl's father and counter-assault on the MLA's aides, reported TOI.

This incident came into limelight when the victim, along with her family members, had tried to commit suicide in front of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's residence on April 8 in Lucknow, alleging that she was raped by Sengar and his fellow accomplices.
