The northern command GOC of army has confirmed life sentences to six army-personnel on 7 September 2015, in relation to the 2010 Machil fake encounter case.

According to a report in Deccan Herald, Colonel Dinesh Pathania, Captain Upendra, Havildar Devendra Kumar, Lance Naik Lakhmi, Lance Naik Arun Kumar and Rifleman Abbas Hussain have been sentenced to life.

In April 2010, the army released photographs of three alleged guerillas, claiming to have killed them near Kupwara, Kashmir, while they tried to infiltrate the country.

After these pictures were made public, there was an outcry from the locals claimed that the alleged guerillas were killed in a fake encounter after a staged gunfight and they were not related to any militant activities.

Police investigation has proved that these young men were taken to the border after being lured by false promises of jobs made by the army personnel and were killed in a fake encounter.
