SC orders proceeding against 3 lawyers over Patiala House Court violence

Supreme Court on Friday, 26 February issued a notice to centre, Delhi Police and the three lawyers who assaulted Kanhaiya Kumar, the Jawaharlal Nehru University student at Patiala House Court complex.

The apex court ordered proceedings against the lawyers: Vikram Chauhan, Om Sharma and Yashpal Singh.

The apex court was hearing a petition seeking a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe against the violence at the court complex. A group of lawyers assaulted scribes and the JNU student at the court complex. Later, in an India Today sting operation, one of the lawyers, Vikram Singh Chauhan accepted that they thrashed Kanhaiya Kumar.

The SC asked for responses within seven days on why contempt proceeding was not initiated against the three lawyers.

Meanwhile, the police questioned Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and other accused of the sedition charges in the JNU case.
