Rahul Gandhi to protest in Jalandhar to highlight Punjab's drug abuse problem

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi will join a mass protest in Jalandhar on 13 June to highlight the rampant drug abuse among the youth and collapse of law and order in Punjab.

The Congress has been quite vocal against the drug menace in the state. The party has also slammed the center and the censor board in the row over the upcoming Bollywood release, Udta Punjab.

Punjab's Congress unit chief and the party's chief ministerial face for the assembly polls, Amarinder Singh, said that he would screen the uncensored version of the movie in Majitha, considered as hub of drug smuggling in Punjab.

He said, "Majitha town, like Mexico, is the epicentre of drugs trade in Punjab. It was decided to release the movie there."

Earlier, Congress had also targetted PM Modi of "covertly ensuring" that the film is banned or "at least neutered" to hide the scale of the drug problem in Punjab.
