The Union Cabinet had approved the 10 per cent quota to economically backward Upper caste in Government jobs and Education sector. This quota bill was tabled in Lok Sabha on Tuesday and was passed in the parliament following which a fresh debate irked from Tamil Nadu’s ruling AIADMK. Hurling the ‘trump card’ the AIADMK leader attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and reminded him of Rs. 15 lakh he promised to deliver each Indian.
"PM Modi promised Rs. 15 lakh in each account. Had he implemented it, there would be no need for this Bill," said lawmaker M Thambi Durai, referring to a pre-election promise that is regularly raised by the Congress and other opposition parties.
Raising questions on the process of implementation of the bill, he added that new law will only increase corruption. "People may pay a bribe and get a certificate that he/she is poor," he said.
Lok Sabha has passed a bill to introduce 10 per cent reservation for poorer sections of general category. Reportedly, after passing the 10% quota reservation bill likely to cover nearly 190 million people belongs to general category.
Under the proposed law, 10 per cent quota to economically backward people from general category. This will be over and above the 50 per cent quota allowed by the Supreme Court for Scheduled Castes and Tribes and Other Backward Classes. But only people who earn less than Rs. 8 lakh a year and own less than five acres of land, will be eligible for the quota.
