Mumbai Rains: NDRF rescues stranded 2,000 passengers as water-logging heavily disrupted transportation services; several trains cancelled

As heavy rains lashed Mumbai causing huge water-logging, the NDRF and Mumbai police came out to rescue passengers stranded due to rain.

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) in a joint operation with the police and fire-brigade personnel rescued around 2,000 passengers of two Mumbai-bound trains. They were the passengers of Shatabdi Express and Vadodara Express, a Palghar district official said on Tuesday.

“As of now, we have rescued almost all 2,000 passengers from both the trains,” Times of India was quoted as saying.

Along with the NDRF and police, strangers also come out to help out stranded Vadodara Express passengers.

The Vadodara Express which left from Vadodar Junction on Monday night was expected to reach its destination – Mumbai Central – at 4.45 am on Tuesday.

Massive traffic jam was seen on the Eastern Express Highway, Western Express Highway and the Eastern Freeway across the city.

Local trains faced huge hurdles in moving from one station to another causing huge trouble for lakhs of office-goers and other commuters.

Officials said that several long-distance and inter-city express trains were delayed or cancelled and suburban services were suspended on one section of the local network.

Due to waterlogging on tracks between Mankhurd and Govandi stations, train services were for sometimes suspended on the Vashi-Mumbai CSMT section of the Harbour Line.

After the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted heavy to very rain till Thursday in the city and neighboring areas, the city has been put on a high alert.
