An MLA of the ruling BJP in Uttar Pradesh has courted controversy after she criticized former UP CM Mayawati in harsh language and said that, ‘she was a blot on womankind’ and accused her of “selling her dignity for power.”

The BJP lawmaker Sadhana Singh from Mughalsarai claimed that “She has no sense of self-respect... she was almost molested earlier and yet... in history, when Draupadi was molested, she took a vow for revenge... but this woman, she lost everything, but still sold her dignity for the sake of power. We strongly condemn Mayawati ji. She is a blot on womankind. A woman who gulped down insults for comfort and power ... is a blot on womankind.”

The lawmaker was referring to the infamous incident of Guest House scandal, which led to the animosity between the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party as Mayawati, was allegedly attacked by the goons and workers of the Samajwadi Party, and she was manhandled. The incident happened, as Mayawati was planning to take back her support from the ruling SP, and Mulayam Singh Yadav was Chief Minister.

The incident rocked the Uttar Pradesh politics and the SP-BSP alliance, which was frozen until last week. BSP, commenting about the statement of the BJP MLA, said, “Frustration with the SP-BSP alliance, the level of language shows their mental illness.”

Congress’ spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi tweeted upon the incident, stating “One may have differences on issues and ideas but it is disturbing: -That this lady represents the ruling party in UP-BJP (not surprising) -To hear a lady speak in such a derogatory way about another lady -To see people in the audience cheering such words.”
