Manipur: Heavy rainfall may cause flooding

News Agencies | Updated on: 10 February 2017, 1:50 IST

State government officials have issued a warning that Manipur might be exposed to a major flood due to heavy rainfall in the state.

The rainfall has resulted in rise in water levels of the state's main rivers. If the water level does not recede quickly then Manipur might be flooded, the officials warned.

The state government has also informed that all five floodgates of the Itahi Barrage have been opened as a precautionary measure. They also confirmed that a boy was electrocuted at Porompat near the Commando Police Barrack when he was caught in flood waters.

A 50-feet-long stretch on the eastern side of the Imphal River bank has been breached. The breach has resulted in at least 100 houses, kitchen gardens, and agricultural fields being submerged.

People are in a state of panic and many of them have started building dykes and embankments along the vulnerable areas of Khurai Nandeibam Leikai, Khurai Heikrumakhong, Khurai Thoudam Leikai, Lairikyengbam Makha Leikai, and Singjamei Leishangthem Leikai. Large areas of the valley have been already flooded.

A large section of the people has criticised the state government and relevant departments for not initiating a single step to tackle the floods.
