A massive fire broke out at a popular cloth shop in a village near Pune. At least 5 people suffocated to death after a major fire engulfed in a popular saree shop on Thursday.

According to an official of Pune Police (Rural), the fire broke out around 5 a.m., when the workers were asleep in a room above the shop located in the Uruli Devachi Urli area on the outskirts of the Pune city.

The blaze quickly spread inside the shop and reached to the room above, following which the labourers were suffocated to death.

Around five fire tenders were rushed to the spot. The fire has now been controlled and the injured have been rushed to the hospital.

Meanwhile, the police official said that they are trying to verify whether there were more workers sleeping as it is feared that the death toll could go up. The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed.
