Kerala teacher's sexist 'slice of melon' remark on Muslim girls draws ire; students protests against Farook Training College professor

In shocking remarks, the Kerala professor shamed Muslim girl students of his college for and termed as the students' dressing 'un-Islamic'. The professor Jouhar Munavvir T is a social science teacher at Farook Training College.

The professor termed in his remark that Farook Training College Muslim girl students deliberately flaunt their chest, "like how we slice a small part of a melon to see if it's ripe." The professor also accused women of "exposing the leggings they are wearing." "That is not Islamic.'

The professors 'sexist' remark over Muslim girls and claiming that they were not wearing the hijab properly has triggered a huge protest march across the state by the Muslim students. This protest has met it's worst level that some of the women are even posting 'nude' photographs.

According to a leading Malayalam news portal, a man named Vishnu shared a 'topless' picture of his partner Arathy SA on Facebook to protests against the professor's remark. A Thiruvananthapuram-based woman Diya Sana also shared a picture of a topless woman holding 'watermelon' to hide her breast. Later, both the post got viral.

“I am a teacher of a college where 80 per cent of the students are girls and of that, the majority are Muslims. These girls are not wearing a dress as per the religious tradition. They are not covering their chests with hijab. But showing part of it is like a slice of red watermelon being displayed,” an Assistant Professor at Farook College, Kozhikode, said.

Many students have taken out a march protest outside Farook Training College, demanding a strict action against him. The student's sais, just like the 'Pink Chaddi' campaign they will send slices of watermelons to the professor. The Pink Chaddi campaign was organised in response tot he attacks women in a pub in Mangaluru in 2009 by activists of rightwing fringe group Sri Ram Sene.

“We will flood him with watermelons,” student activist P Ajitha said.

Meanwhile, the principal of Farook College CA Jawahar said that the professor made the statement three months ago during a counselling session outside the college and it was unfair to whip it up now.

“He goes regularly for religious discourses. We have nothing to do with it and no student has filed a complaint in this regard,” he defended the teacher, saying only a portion of his speech was circulated.
