Kargil Vijay Diwas 2020: When father-son duo fought for the 1999 war

The memories of 26 July 1999 are still very much alive for the people of the country. It was the day when India won the Kargil war after 2 months of a long battle. The victory seemed to be impossible to achieve but the Indian soldiers did their best to turn the impossible into possible by forcing out every trespasser from our motherland.

The entire nation sings the glory and sacrifices made by the Indian troopers during Indo-Pak war with pride. The war heroes’ stories are enough to fill the heart with pride, so this Vijay Diwas we have brought to you one such story of a father-son duo who won the war along with the other soldiers.


The valour of Lt Col (Retd) Gobind Singh Bisht and his son Lt Hemant Singh Mahar Bisht fills with inspiration and are the true pair of “Arjun and Abhimanyu”. The father-son duo who belongs to Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand was positioned in the same division however at the different positions, holding the front.

After the operation Vijay was successful Lieutenant Colonel Gobind Singh returned to his battalion. However, his son Lt Hemant remained stationed at the border as the enemy's despicable activities continued.

 

 

It was on 18 September 2000, a commando team got the task of crossing the border to destroy three enemy bunkers. Well, the mission turned out to be successful, however Lt. Hemant got martyred after receiving 7 bullets on the chest. Later, late Lt Hemant was awarded Shaurya Chakra which was accepted by his father Lieutenant Colonel Gobind Singh.

Just like them, there are other father-son duos, who fought bravely for our country during 1999, Kargil War. So, this Vijay Diwas lets not just honour the soldiers but also their families who lost their beloved in the war.
