The death of a 25-year old Dalit man in police custody in Kanpur has resulted in the suspension of 14 policemen. The entire strength of the Police post is now under suspension. A case of murder and kidnapping has also been filed against them. A case under the SC/ST Act has also been registered.

The incident has sparked off tension in Kamal Valmiki, the victim's locality. His relatives clashed with the police over the issue. The police had to resort to lathi charge to control the protesters.
The family came know about his death today. His body was found hanging inside a room in police post, reported the NDTV.
The family alleged that the police is trying to hush up the case as a suicide. According to his family members Valmiki died because of severe beating in police custody after he was picked up by a constable for questioning.

The Akhilesh Yadav government is already firefighting the opposition allegations about poor law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh, following the Bulandshahr gangrape case. The police authorities have told the media that if other police personnel were found involved in the case they will also be punished.
