JNU Sedition row: Kanhaiya Kumar fined, Umar Khalid rusticated by JNU panel in connection with pro-Afzal Guru campus event

The Jawaharlal Nehru University's high-level inquiry panel has upheld the Umar Khalid's rustication and a fine of Rs 10, 000 imposed on Kanhaiya Kumar in connection with two years back sedition row. Over two years back, on February 9, 2016, the infamous incident was executed where anti-national slogans were allegedly raised in the campus by the then JNU students' Union president (JNUSU), Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and others in connection with the campus event against Afzal Guru's hanging.

In 2016, a JNU panel had recommended rustication of them and now it has upheld its decision. The five-member panel had also imposed a financial penalty on 13 other students for violation of disciplinary norms. Khalid, who is to submit his MPhil thesis this month, may not be allowed to carry it further if he is rusticated.


According to sources, the panel has upheld its decision in the case of Khalid and Kumar. “Khalid has been rusticated for six semesters and fined for Rs 20,000, while Kumar’s fine of Rs 10,000 has been upheld,” sources said. "The penalty has also been reduced for some students," a source added.

According to TOI, an alleged pro-Afzal Guru event was organisFebruary 9, 2016, which saw the arrest of three students -- Umar Khalid, Kanhaiya Kumar and Anirban Bhattacharya — on sedition charges. A three-member high-level inquiry committee was constituted by the vice-chancellor on February 11, 2016. However, it was expanded to five members on February 23, 2016, after teachers raised questions against it.
