The head recruiter of Islamic State (IS) in India was reportedly killed during a drone strike in Syria.

An important ally of IS chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the 26-year-old Mohammad Shafi Armar, alias Yousuf, was helping the terror organisation establish a base in India, a Times of India report said.

The Indian unit of the terror outfit is now said to be headless. Shafi was a native of Karntaka's Bhatkal. His elder brother, who was heading the Indian franchise of the IS, had already died last year.

Shafi had recently formed Junud al Khalifa-e-Hind (Soldiers of the Indian Caliphate) after developing difference with Riyaz and Iqbal Bhatkal-led Ansar-ul-Tauhid (AuT), which was born out of Indian Mujahideen.

Listed on Interpol website, Shafi had recruited at least 30 men from India for the international terror group. He was planning to establish an IS unit in every state of the country, arrested IS recruits told security forces.
