As two phases of Lok Sabha polls have concluded and voting for the third phase is scheduled for April 23, a major twist has surfaced in Amethi where a petitioner has alleged that Rahul Gandhi’s nomination papers have major mistakes and he has declared that he is a citizen of United Kingdom.

Rahul Gandhi, who filed the nomination from Amethi, is also contesting the 2019 elections from Kerala’s Wayanad seat and has filed the nomination for both. Gandhi has been a member of parliament since 2004 from the Gandhi bastion of Amethi.

On basis of certificate of incorporation of a company registered in UK, he declared himself a UK citizen. A non-citizen can't contest polls here,” said Ravi Prakash, the lawyer of independent MP candidate from Amethi, Dhruv Lal who has raised objections on Rahul Gandhi's nomination papers.

Ravi further added to his claim that “There are no details on assets&profits of the company mentioned in the affidavit. There are a no. of mistakes in his educational qualification certificates. The original educational certificates should be presented so that his (Rahul Gandhi) claim can be established.”

The returning officer of Amethi has scheduled to hear the case on April 22.

Meanwhile, the BJP has alleged that Congress president has fudged his papers and raised the question over his citizenship. The BJP spokesperson said that “Is Rahul Gandhi a UK citizen?”

The election in Amethi is scheduled to take place on May 6 and the Eastern Uttar Pradesh’s responsibility has been handed over to Priyanka Gandhi, who was adjudged as the General Secretary in-charge of the UP East.
