Infosys techie murder: Accused acted alone, say Chennai Police

In a major breakthrough, the Chennai Police arrested the main accused in the sensational murder case of Infosys software engineer S Swathi, which took place at the Nungambakkam Railway Station in Chennai last week.

Divulging the details about the same, Chennai Police Commissioner TK Rajendran told media that accused Ramkumar, a 22-year-old engineering graduate from Meenakshipuram in Tirunelveli, slit his throat with a sharp object when the police surrounded him.

"Our teams were able to zero in on him after thorough investigation. We conducted searches in Choolaimedu, Nungambakkam, and Infosys campus. To take custody of the accused we reached to Thirunelveli Police and they helped in nabbing the accused. When the police neared the accused, he made a self-inflicting wound with a knife," Rajendran said.

The Chennai Police Commissioner also said that the accused was stalking Swathi continuously.

He further asserted that there is only one accused in this case.

"There is no accomplice. The motive behind the crime will be known during the investigation," he added.

He also lauded the efforts of people for helping the police.

"People from across Chennai and rest of Tamil Nadu, as well as from other states, provided information that helped us crack the case. Her [Swathi] parents cooperated with the investigation; they shared some information with us," he said.

On 24 June, the 24-year-old woman employee of Infosys was hacked to death at Chennai's Nungambakkam railway station by the suspect at 6.30 am.

Swathi was on her way to work at Mahindra City, about 60 km south of Chennai.

The Chennai Police had released a high-resolution image of the suspect in the murder.

On Monday, the case was transferred from railway police to the Chennai police after Madras High Court's intervention. The police had discovered that the killer was a young man who was following Swathi since May.

Police reportedly took the help of a Hyderabad-based digital forensic firm to take out high-resolution pictures of the accused.
