India Rankings 2016: IIT Madras best engineering college

According to the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) which is a first-of-its-kind survey commissioned by the government, IIT Madras has been declared the best Engineering college.

The ranking evaluates higher educational institutions in Engineering, Management, Universities and Pharmacy categories.

IIM Bengaluru has bagged the best management institute spot in the country, while IIT Mumbai and IIT Kharagpur are second and third in the engineering category. IIM Ahmedabad is ranked second and IIM Calcutta is ranked third in the management category.

"The objective of India Rankings 2016 is to sensitise educational institutes, empower students and parents. It allows healthy competition between higher educational institutions and students benefit in the process," the HRD Ministry said in a series of tweets.

"The rankings, which cover government and private institutions, have been released ahead of the next academic year which starts in the summer for college students," it added.

In the pharmacy category, the list was topped by Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, while the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (Chandigarh) and Jamia Hamdard are on the second and third positions.
