The Rajya Sabha today cleared the India's biggest tax reform, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Constitutional Amendment Bill, which was tabled today in the Upper House today afternoon. Read: All about GST
The bill was supported by Congress and most of the other parties like Samajwadi Party, JD(U) and Trinamool Congress. AIADMK, however, opposed the move and staged a walk out from the house, saying their concerns over GST not addressed.
The Bill will bring in a uniform tax across the country. It was passed by the Lok Sabha in May 2015, but remained stuck in the Upper House as the Opposition raised issues over several of its provisions.
The revised GST bill will reportedly go back to the Lok Sabha for fresh approval.
Earlier in the day, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley thanked the Congress and said,"There has been major consensus building that has taken place. I am extremely thankful to all opposition parties and especially Ghulam Nabi Azad (Leader of the Opposition)."
