The girl whose complaint of molestation on 12 April led to violent protests and firing in Handwara, addressed a press conference on 16 May and affirmed that she was indeed molested by an Army man and had been forced to record a false statement previously.

The girl revealed that the army personnel had grabbed her hand outside the washroom and beat her up to record a false statement. She also said that the police officers slapped, abused and spat on her during her police custody.

A local news portal, Kashmirreader, quoted the girl saying, "My signatures were taken on blank papers as well as written papers."

The girl had previously recorded her statement before the chief judicial magistrate of the town and said she had not been molested by anyone from the Army.

After spending nearly a month in 'protective' police custody, the schoolgirl in Handwara was released to her family on 12 May.
