Hamid Ansari nod for CBI to prosecute MP Anil Sahani in LTC scam

News Agencies | Updated on: 15 April 2016, 13:48 IST

On 15 April, Rajya Sabha chairman Mohammed Hamid Ansari gave his approval to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to prosecute Member of Parliament Anil Sahni for his alleged role in the Leave and Travel Concession (LTC) scam.

Former Janata Dal (United) chief Sharad Yadav on Friday welcomed the move, saying that his party will take due cognisance of the case and will not tolerate any illegitimate behaviour.

Yadav told ANI, "I don't have much knowledge of the issue, but yes the party will not tolerate or support illegitimate behaviour. We will take due cognisance of the case."

The scam relates to reimbursements being claimed against fake boarding passes and bills from the Rajya Sabha Secretariat.

The CBI had filed a chargesheet against the Rajya Sabha MP and three others in the scam in October last year.

The agency had sought a prosecution sanction against Sahni, but went ahead and filed the chargesheet due to a delay in the process.

This is the first time that a sanction has been passed to prosecute a sitting member of the Rajya Sabha. Ansari's move falls under Section 197 of CrPC which gives the Rajya Sabha chairman the authority to give sanction to prosecute sitting MPs of the upper House.
