Ex-TMC Minister Madan Mitra granted bail in Saradha chit fund scam case

After facing prison time of 22 months, ex-TMC Minister and prime accused in the Saradha chit fund scam case Madan Mitra was granted bail by the Alipore District Court on 9 September.

Mitra has been granted bail in exchange of a personal bond of Rs 30 lakh. The court has also directed him to submit his passport, and register his attendance with the CBI office once a week.

On 8 September, tenth Additional District Judge, Alipore, Uttam Kumar Nandy reserved his judgement after hearing the lawyers. Mitra's counsel appealed for his bail, claiming that the former minister was no more influential after losing this year's Assembly polls.

The CBI's counsel objected the bail plea, saying, "Mitra still has access to the witnesses in the case and if granted bail he will try to influence them."

Mitra was arrested on 12 December, 2014.
