The Aam Aadmi Party has offered a clerical post to Dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula's brother Raja Vemula on "compassionate grounds".

Raja holds a masters degree in geology from Pondicherry Central University with 72.8 per cent marks. dna reported that Raja has cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET) and is eligible to be hired in any college in the country as an assistant professor.

Faculty members and Raja's fellow students from HCU fumed with anger as they alleged that it was extremely demeaning to offer such a highly qualified person a job of a clerk. dna quoted Rohith's close friend Gummidi Prabhakar saying, "Raja is a highly qualified, hard working and a bright Dalit. Offering him a job like this is simply insulting."

However, Delhi government officials stated that only clerical level jobs can be offered on compassionate grounds, as per Zee News reports.

In a Hindustan Times report, a government official said, "When the family had come to Delhi, they had asked for a job for Rohith's brother and had expressed a desire to move to Delhi. We have offered them a house. As per rules, only this is possible without going through the regular recruitment process. The aim is to help the family tide over financial distress."

Raja is yet to respond to the offer.
